Workshop Deutsch – Sprechen, Lernen, Erleben

Workshop Deutsch is a German conversation meeting, where people from different countries and cultures meet in order to practice and learn German. Our personal experience with this workshop is very positive.

When we arrived, we had a very nice welcome from the lecturer Birgit. At the time when we entered, not many people were there yet, but soon enough, the class was complete. The group was a mixture of people from Finland, Italy, Spain, USA and other countries.

Every meeting, the topic of the workshop is different. On the meeting which we attended, we discussed about recycling and trash. It was very interesting and we learned a lot of new and useful information. The atmosphere of the workshop was very relaxed. Everyone was friendly and open-minded. Birgit is a great lecturer always willing to help. We would recommend this workshop to people who want to improve their German skills, meet new people, gain new information and most importantly, have a lot fun!

If you are interested, don’t hesitate and just write an e-mail to office@cic-network.at, where you will be able to receive more information about the coming workshop.

The student life in Villach (through the eyes of a management student)

Villach is a great city to live in. It is really nice indeed, but when it comes to studying here, things might change a little bit. Being a student in Villach has both some advantages and disadvantages.

For those who don’t know, Villach is a middle-sized city in southern Austria in the region Carinthia. To be honest, before coming here I haven’t even heard about Villach. Then, when I arrived I saw how relaxing, calm and beautiful it was. In my opinion, one of the biggest advantages in studying here is that Villach is close to 3 different countries: Slovenia, Italy and Germany. You can easily explore new places in your free time. Furthermore, although its small size, Villach is surrounded by people from all over the world, it is a big mixture of cultures here. And this is what surprised me, because I did not expect that even people from countries like Brazil or Iraq would be here. This side of Villach is really interesting and useful for those who want to learn new things about the different cultures. One another plus of being a student in Villach is that you can really easily reach every place you want to go in a quick way, even from the one side to the other side of the city you can go with bike. A bike really saves you here because the ticket for the public transport cost 2,10 euro.

And with this point we come to the disadvantages of the student life here. For some people 2,10 euro might not be so much, but for students, come on… who would want to pay that every time you want to go to the city center? I guess very few people. That’s why, everywhere in Villach you can see people at all age either walking or riding bike. Moreover, Villach is a relatively expensive city and this is mainly because it is more like a touristic city. Renting an apartment would not be the best option for students. Instead, most of them prefer staying in dormitories. The student cafeteria in the university here is also not so cheap. I think that all students wish that it was at least a little bit cheaper. Other not so nice thing here: the Carinthean German. Here it is not really the best place for learning German because the local people here speak in a dialect which is possible to understand, but many things a non-German speaker would not be able to understand.

In conclusion, I cannot say that Villach has only dark or only bright side. Wherever you go, there will always be some things that don’t appeal to you and some that you really love. The same case is with Villach. I really like the atmosphere and the people here, studying here is nice but about the future life I would think twice. Some of you might ask ‘Why?’ And my answer would be: “Because it is good for living a peaceful life after retirement or simply having a vacation but for young people it doesn’t provide as many opportunities for job and improvements as the bigger cities.”
