Hundsmarhof is one of Mount Dobratsch's most popular year-round hiking destinations. Hundsmarhof was a working farm, that has been converted into an eatery. It is within reach from several starting points, which can vary depending on the weather and the hiker's physical strength. But all trails lead to a clearing in the woods in whose midst Hundsmarhof is standing. The cozy, old farmhouse has a tiled stove and its tables are big enough for three families each. There is a children's playground and plenty of space to run over the clearing's meadow.
The shortest hike to Hundsmarhof starts at Heiligengeist. Coming from Villach, drive in the direction of Bad Bleiberg and upon leaving the small village of Heiligengeist, turn to the left, thus following the sign 'Hundsmarhof'. The big parking lot is a remnant from times (not so long ago), when downhill skiing was still practiced on Mount Dobratsch and this was where the long downhill run did end. First, walk about 100 meters on an asphalt road from the parking lot to the edge of the woods. Then, another 3 km on a forest road (cleared of snow in winter), without considerable ascent. The road is even suited for strollers and already the little ones can do this easy, short hike, which takes less than an hour. On snowy winter days, there are also horse-drawn sleigh rides from Heiligengeist to Hundsmarhof (contacts below).
Those who love riding a sledge start at Villach-Pogöriach. Drive to the parking of Goritschacher Weg. From there it is a 4 km hike through the woods to Hundsmarhof, which is situated 400 m further above. Plan a good 1,5 hours for the ascent, while the 4 km long sledge ride back to Pogöriach should be a bit shorter. On picture-perfect winter days this is a fun thing to do until well into the dark of night.
Sometimes you might escape the fog by starting your hike at the Villacher Alpenstraße/Alpine Road, P2, and approach Hundsmarhof via Völkendorfer Alm (6 km, 200 m difference in altitude, 1,5 hours). If you choose this route, you need to walk down the Alpine Road for a good 200 m, and then turn left to the forest road that leads to the Völkendorfer Alm/Völkendorfer Pasture (watch out for the signs!) and from there proceed in the direction of Heiligengeist/Hundsmarhof. Please note, that there is no snow clearance on this route, nor on the ones mentioned below:
The most challenging hike is for sure the one that starts at Warmbad. From there you go up the Tscheltschnigkogel and then reach Hundsmarhof via Völkendorfer Alm/Völkendorfer Pasture (15 km, 570 m difference in altitude, 3,5 hours). Or you climb down to Hundsmarhof, starting at the 'Kaserin', a place next to the Villacher Alpenstraße/Alpine Road, after P5, on 1400 m altitude. By choosing this trail, the ascent is on your way back (3,5 km, 410 difference in altitude, descent: 1 hour, ascent: 1,5-2 hours).
