Imerys Fused Minerals (formerly Treibacher Schleifmittel GmbH) originates from the Treibacher Chemische Werk AG (founded 1898) and became an independent company in 1994. Major shareholder is IMERYS Group (imerys). Imerys shares are listed at the stock exchange in Paris.
During the 2nd world war production of Fused Aluminum Oxide (also known as Artificial Corundum) started in the Villach plant. Fused Aluminum Oxide is the most popular mineral for the abrasive industry (sharp edged grains and hardness). It is also widely used in applications where wear and tear resistance is required and due to its thermal properties also an important raw material for the production of refractory materials.
The raw materials for the production of Fused Aluminum Oxide are bauxite and alumina which are fused in electric arc furnaces at temperatures of above 2000°C. Afterwards the fused ingots are crushed and milled. Finally, the separation of the grain is carried out by sieving machines, classifying the material according to international standards. Depending on the final application of the grain usually additional refining steps are carried out. The size of the finished grits range from several millimetres to a few microns and are sold under the trade name TREIBACHER ALODUR® to more than 50 countries world-wide.
Nowadays Imerys Fused Minerals is the leading producer of fused alumina grains, magnesium- and zircon oxide in the world with further plants in Italy, England, Germany, Slovenia, USA, Brazil, Bahrain and China (2).
