According to the 2009/10 consumer survey, Austrians spent on average, per head of the adult population and per household for instance 1% of their income on education, 1.7% on communications, 2.4% on alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, 3.5% on health, 5.7% in cafés and/restaurants, 5.7% on clothing and footwear, 6.9% on household goods and furnishings, 12.8% on leisure, sport and hobbies, 12.1% on food and non-alcoholic beverages, 15% on transport and 23.8% on housing and energy.

 

Monthly household expenditure is highest in Carinthia and lowest in Burgenland.

In 2015, the average monthly rent including running costs was EUR 7.14 per square metre (price details indicative only).

 

Energy costs (gas and electricity), housing costs and the cost of petrol, diesel and heating oil have risen in recent years; the cost of leisure, hobbies and sport and housing and energy is relatively high compared with the EU average.
