Population and Language
With the start of 2009 Carinthia had a total of 560,605 inhabitants. The biggest cities are the federal state's capital Klagenfurt and Villach, with populations of 93,478 and 58,949, respectively. Wolsberg is the biggest city of Carinthia's sectional districts (25,316). This is followed by Spittal an der Drau (15,926), Feldkirchen (14,343), St. Veit an der Glan (12,866), Völkermarkt (11,387) and Hermagor (7,139). (Source: Carinthian regional government, 1.1.2009).
The life-expectancy of men is 77.6 years, that of women 83.7 years.
The governing language is German. Slovenian is also accepted as an official language, as there is a Slovenian-speaking minority in Carinthia.
English is taught as the first foreign language at school.
