REVILLA Re-Use Kaufhaus
REVILLA Re-Use Kaufhaus is a department store of the future: it gives a new meaning to people and things by promoting re-use and creating jobs. Renate Schlatter and the organization UnruhestandAKTIV founded the business in December 2019. The premises they took over in Ringmauergasse had formerly been occupied by C&A and had then stood empty for eight years. They were about to undergo a complete transformation.
Since its opening on March 6th 2020 Frau Schlatter has transformed the 1,400 m2 into a shopping paradise of used furniture and clothes (including wedding dresses and ballgowns), secondhand electrical appliances, toys, games, books, DVDs, jewellery and more. The enterprise wants to send out the message to young people that secondhand things are cool and offers space for people to meet and be inspired. Backstage tours and re-use workshops can be arranged for groups by appointment.
REVILLA is however more than just a department store and social initiative. It also creates jobs by providing a place for creative people called shop partners to sell their re-used goods. These are either secondhand or constructed from recycled materials. The shop partners are self-employed and pay rent and a percentage of sales - when something in their shop is sold they are notified by email. At special public events new skills can be learnt. For example, at Nähvilla on May 21st 2021 there is the opportunity to learn how to use a sewing machine and gain an inhouse qualification. The Urban Sketchers drawing group had an event on May 20th and Musik will play live on May 29th. The current programme can be found on the website and Facebook.
REVILLA is always looking for used items that can be salvaged or repaired. Items that are no longer liked or used that it would be a pity to throw away can be taken along to the ReVilla department store. There is a collection service too. Members of the public have discarded a lot of goods following lockdowns, thereby creating much-needed space and contributing to both the environment and society.
Proceeds from the business pay employees’ wages and are channelled into development, investment, new jobs and hire services. The future looks bright: having achieved eleven of the UN Sustainable Development Goals in the programme, REVILLA has been nominated for the Austrian SDG 2020 Award. UnruhestandAKTIV also plans to once again run the Repair Café in the ATRIO shopping centre as soon as possible.
